Advanced iPhone Battery Optimization Tips

October 26, 2012

Maintaining battery life is a constant battle for any iPhone user. If you have tried all the basic optimization techniques, including disabling unused features, keeping your phone cool, and keeping your software up to date, here are some advanced iPhone battery optimization tips or rather last-ditch ideas that can help you to keep your iPhone running when you need it.

Use Your Battery Properly

Ironically, when trying to optimize battery performance on the iPhone, you will actually need to make sure you are using it frequently enough.

Proper maintenance of the iPhone lithium-ion battery requires the electrons in the battery to be moving occasionally. The minimum recommended level of usage is to go through at least one charge cycle every month where you charge the battery to 100% and then completely run it down before charging it again.

Stay Away From Battery Intensive Applications or Activities

One last-ditch effort you can use to preserve battery life is to postpone battery intensive activities with your phone. This strategy will mainly be useful if you are in a situation where you are just trying to keep your phone from dying before you are able to charge it again. Here’s a quick list of some activities to avoid when trying to hold on to that last bit of juice on your phone: web browsing, checking emails, making or taking phone calls, playing graphic or data intensive games, or doing anything that uses a lot of processing power.

If you get into a situation where you just need to hang on a little longer to receive an important phone call, you’ll be glad you knew some of these options for saving that last bit of battery power.

Use External Battery Cases

If all else fails and you find that you just need more battery life than optimization can get you, it may be time to get an extended battery life case. These cases attach to your iPhone as an external battery so that your phone can stay charged longer using the case’s battery power instead of the phone’s battery. There are many different options for these battery cases for the iPhone, including: the Phone Suite Elite Battery Case, the Mophie Juice Pack, and the Exogear Exolife Battery Case. Deciding which extended battery life case to get is up to you; it would take too much space to compare all the options in this article.

Have Realistic Expectations

When optimizing your iPhone’s battery life, it is also important to understand what you can realistically expect from the battery’s lifespan. Batteries are considered a consumable part of any electronic device (like printer ink, brake pads, or light bulbs) – they are never expected to last forever.

A well cared for iPhone battery is expected to keep up to 80% of the original charge capacity for a full 400 charging cycles. This means that after a few years, you can expect to see noticeable degradation in the quality of your phone’s charging or battery life.

When your phone’s battery life no longer meets your needs, you will need to contact Apple to find out about your options for getting a replacement battery. Depending on your specific situation there is a possibility that you won’t have to pay for the replacement, but not everyone qualifies to have the replacement done for free.

Adapt, Enhance, or Replace

With these iPhone battery optimization tips under your belt, you now have the advanced tools you need to optimize your iPhone’s battery usage even in desperate circumstances. Knowing what to realistically expect from your battery will tell you if you are being effective, if you need to replace your battery, or if you need to expand the capabilities of your phone with external devices.
