It may shock many however the preference of users on web browsers is changing so much these days. Microsoft owned Internet Explorer has held the helm for so many years since it did a coup on Netscape in 1995. A lot has happened since, and programmers have been busy working on security features, user interface and general compatibility issues. According to StatCounter.com and PC Magazine, Google Chrome is taking the lead on so many fronts and is now the World’s most preferred web browser.

First, it is designed for security where it has scored very high in comparison to other web browsers. The graphics and user interface makes it great to use all the time. The only major challenge to Google Chrome is Mozilla Firefox that has a large following due to its simplicity and ability to support many add-ons.

When it comes to internet traffic, Chrome has about 33 percent in comparison to that of Internet Explorer at about 31 percent. Firefox comes third at 24%. These numbers keep changing to the advantage of Google Chrome on a daily basis. Even though Firefox gets most of its revenue from Google, it still strives to challenge Google’s Chrome browser on traffic lead.

This growth in Google Chrome is so rapid it has shocked so many people. Just a year ago, it had a 20 % market share with Internet Explorer leading at 45 %. It has torn IE so fast with Firefox remaining relatively stable. Just in December last year Chrome overtook Firefox therefore becoming the number two browser.

In North America, IE is still the king though it has dropped from about 38 to 24 percent. Google Chrome is fast taking ground there too. It is still early to tell what the future holds because IE and Firefox are also working hard to grab a major share of the traffic.

What about the rest?

The remaining small percentage has been taken by Safari whose figures has marginally risen and Opera at the end with a slight loss to the giants. Individual user ratings may give very different figures due to personal preferences and comfort with a given browser over the years. However, basic functions and features like graphics, speed, load on memory and compatibility to numerous add-ons and plug-ins matters a lot.

In the US and UK especially, Chrome still lags behind IE mainly due to traditional users who are not fast in changing their browsers. This may not be known by many but it is not the first time the Google Chrome has overtaken IE, however it is the first time it has held the position long enough to be mentioned. It usually supersedes IE for a day or some hours but not a week as it has done this time. IE has been steadily losing its ground for the last four years loosing almost 70 % of its share. Only time will tell what awaits the browsing market players.
