We had a fabulous smartphone year in 2013 and probably even gave in to the temptation of buying a few of the Galaxies and iPhones for ourselves and for our family members. If you have not succumbed to the sweet temptation of owning a premium smartphone yet, there’s always a new year with the promise of newer devices testing your willpower. Here’s a look at five of the coolest new smartphones launching this year.
New Smartphones Expected to Launch in 2014
The iPhone 6
This name may start to sound a bit stale, but the iPhone still delivers the best smartphone experience for users and that’s good enough to acknowledge the fact that an iPhone 6 launch is imminent. Apple is finally expected to address the small screen issue with the iPhone 6. In fact there is even talk of an iPhone Air which will be an iPhone phablet landing in pockets this year. Coming back to the iPhone 6, other feature improvements one expects to see is a more slimmed down lighter version with a Sapphire glass display. About time, don’t you think? Launch dates are as usual a mystery with many voices hoping for a May release while others are resigning to a possible November release.
HTC One
HTC’s flagship model, The One will also be launching in 2014. Not to be confused with the HTC One from last year, and the HTC One released previous to the HTC One…err. HTC has been struggling in the smartphone market and its disheartening to note that the company can’t even to come up with an original name for its 2014 model. Luckily the HTC One of old is a fantastic device and we hope that the 2014 will top it. Android 4.4, KitKat, a 2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm processor, and a 5 inch display with 1920×1080 resolution are just some of the goodness we can expect with the One this year. Launch dates: February 2014.
LG G Flex
LG’s first curved screen smartphone the LG G Flex was announced sometime last year and is coming to customers in the first week of February 2014. The G Flex will come with a 13MP camera, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor and an infrared transmitter that can control your TV. With its 6 inch screen, it is most likely to fit into the phablet category. The striking feature of the phone is however likely to be the flexible screen which gives it a curvy appearance, which fits perfectly in your hand when you’re making a call.
The Lumia 929
With a string of cool Lumia releases in 2013, Nokia is going ahead with another handset in 2014 and this one is going to be the Lumia 929 or the Lumia Icon. The Icon will be a 5 inch smartphone with a 1080p display. It is expected to run on a Snapdragon 800 processor. Consumers can also get the full benefits of the famed PureView camera. The device is expected to be launched some time next month.
Samsung Galaxy S5
We will round up this post with a launch from one of the biggest mobile makers of 2013, Samsung. They are taking their flagship model, the Galaxy S4 to the next level in 2014. What can we expect with this one; a 64 bit processor, a metallic body, 16MP camera, a fingerprint scanner, and possibly a move away from Android to the Tizen operating system. (Its most likely a possibility but we can never say). Expected launch date: sometime this March.
Are you looking forward to seeing some innovative developments in the smartphone industry this year? Who do you think will be the surprise winner, if any?
