The sounds of silence may not echo in your halls, but sometimes should. If silence is not your thing for relaxation and soothing sounds are, TaoMix is just the right app that will set the mood from sounds you assemble into your own orchestra. Created by Sebastien Mourey, TaoMix is a sound mixer and player that offers a variety of sound categories and a simple, almost Zen-like, interface to mix them. The entire app is painted on a black canvas, allowing you, the artist, to paint an image that comes to life through sound.
TaoMix App Review
To be exact, this free app allows you to start off with a clean palette. Go to the list of sound categories and choose one. Sound categories are sounds inspired from nature and include Humans, Water, Rain, Wind, Fire, Ocean, and more. In the free version of this app, you usually get one sound per category. Each sound is crisp and clear, as if you were in nature and hearing the real thing.
Setting Moods with Customized Mixes
After you choose a few sounds, they will all appear as colored circles with a category emblem and a distinct color. A white ring will also be on the screen, kind of denoting home base. Move the circles around the screen and note how its volume increases as it nears the ring. If you wish to remove a sound from your creation, tap on its circle and then tap on the trashcan. When you tap on the circle, it expands and itself is encircled by a rainbow of sorts, as a dial. Move the dial and see how the sound changes as the color changes.
The app also features a timer, which allows you to set a shut-off time. This works great for those situation where you need to get a toddler to bed with the swoosh of sea waves. You may even find yourself using it to wash away the day with sounds of a small creek trickling its way across stones and the faint sound of a breeze that blows just above it. Set your timer for how long you wish to listen, nod off, and know that the app will take care of the rest.
I was unable to find much wrong with the app. The only downside would be the single sound limit per category. However, it is only fair as the free version did not punctuate the serene moods that the app brought about with annoying ads. I would definitely play around with this app, make multiple combinations from the options available, as there are plenty, and then purchase the upgraded version to get more.
This app is a definite download if you are looking for a mixer and player that brings some balance to your day, fills the background with some peace, and just helps you relax. The mixes you create can be saved and played over and over again. What makes the app different from others is the way it will take your creations and morph them gradually to bring slight change and keep your interest, so you are not hearing the same thing for hours on end. Music to my ears!
