Samsung has introduced its first smartphone that will be running on its open source mobile operating system Tizen. The company has said that the device will initially be launched in Russia in the third quarter of the year after which they hope to expand to other markets. The Tizen platform is already in use in product’s like Samsung’s smartwatches Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo, but this is the first time we will be seeing it in a smartphone.
Samsung Z : The First Tizen Smartphone
Just like Android, Tizen is based on Linux but Samsung says it allows for a faster startup time with high multi tasking capabilities. For users who have battery concerns, the Ultra Power Saving mode will ensure that you have the capabilities to operate the phone even at minimal battery levels.There’s also a Private Mode, a blocking mode, and a download booster that makes use of both Wi-Fi and the data network, and a split-screen capable of multitasking effectively.
The Samsung Z comes with a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED display and is powered by a 2.3GHz quad-core processor. It comes with a built-in fingerprint sensor, an 8 MP rear camera and a 2.1-MP front-facing camera. There is support for 2D and 3D graphic qualities and smooth scrolling for improved web browsing. The battery is 2600 mAh; it has a 16GB storage with an expandable microSD slot and Samsung has put in a heart rate monitor in there too!
The home screen has a distinct layout that makes it easy to access all your favorite features and apps. In fact, you can have as many as eight apps in the bottom of the home screen. Customizing the home screen is possible with Dynamic Boxes or what we call customized widgets and Color Theme settings.
The Tizen phone will come with preinstalled apps and users can pick up additional apps through the Tizen Store. The Samsung Z also supports Samsung’s own applications such as S Health, S Voice, S Translate, and WatchOn Remote for controlling your TV.
The external design of the Samsung Z also has a fresh new look. It is slim and angular with sophisticated lines, giving it a different look and feel although still maintaining the design that we’ve come to know from Samsung. The Samsung Z will be available in Black and Gold. Initial previews of the phone indicate that it looks and feels a lot like the Samsung Galaxy S5.
Samsung has not made any price announcements yet but considering that the device is only coming to Russia later this year, we won’t have to be concerned about it too much.
