Back in the year 2002, I had just joined college and purchased my first mobile phone-a Samsung R200. It was the greatest and happiest day of my life. I had achieved something no one in my family ever did. Own my very own mobile phone! I could download monophonic ringtones, store 10 dialed, received, and missed calls and play 3 games. Today, the advancements in technology and internet connectivity have meant that I can do so much more than what I did back then. With the launch of the 3G services, the mobile phone world is gearing up for yet another revolution; be it downloading movies, music, playing games, sending MMS and more. 3G is definitely going to open a whole new world of opportunities and endless possibilities.A big thanks to Tata DOCOMO which launches its 3G services in 4000 stores across India for giving me the opportunity to share my thoughts on what 3G means to me.
How 3G Will Change the Way I Do Things
Business advantage
In the world of business where time is money, 3G will enable me to stay connected with the latest developments in the organization while I’m on the go. Constant access to the Internet means that I can now check corporate emails, attend video conferences, meetings, and view and deliver presentations without having to get back to my desk.
Connecting through visuals and text
Constantly discussing strategies with foreign clients means that I need to be able to communicate the right information the right way. Now I can rely on my 3G smartphone to annotate my ideas to ensure that the right message is conveyed to my clients.
Finding my way
Be it traveling to a new city or county, instead of relying on a cab or strangers or my guide for directions, I can rely on 3G and use my GPS to get me to my destination. Before I return home from my trip with gifts for family, I can check out the best shopping deals in town. And if I am not sure that my wife is going to like my gift, I can send a picture of the gift from the store and get her approval before I gift-wrap it.

My team constantly plans trekking expeditions. I can now share my journey with family and friends by connecting to them through video conferencing. I can also create a virtual photo album and upload it to Facebook while still on my trip! No need to carry expensive cameras and chargers anymore.

If I need access to some library books, but I’m not able to make it to the library, I can reserve the books online, and reference them from the comfort of my home.

Being an avid traveller, knowing which airlines are offering the best deals is important to me. With 3G I can keep track of all the flight services and the best deals on offer.
Home security
I can ensure that my family is safe and secure at home by setting up an alarm system on my phone that notifies me if the alarm at home goes off.

Sometimes, after a long and tiresome workday, I can relax by watching a good game of football, or check out the world news, or watch funny videos on YouTube either from a park, or my car, or from just about anywhere.

I hope that educated students can reach out to kids in rural areas and help educate them. I hope that medicos in rural areas can get quick advice with the top doctors in the cities. I hope that 3G will help reduce crime in the streets. As I mentioned before, the possibilities of 3G are endless and the hopes to do better things with 3G are infinite.
There is no doubt that 3G is the way forward for India. It is the rainbow that will connect people from Jammu to Kanyakumari, from the depths of rural India to the dazzling cities of the country. I dream of an India where 3G will help Indians connect to faraway lands, cultures, ideas and promote goodwill and peace.
