The name ‘Apple’ triggers a ripple in a mass crowd and people hang onto every move made by Apple. A word from the company is enough for the media to go into a frenzy. This amazing tight-lipped company has revolutionized the tech world by introducing novel devices and has brought a new meaning to the word ‘simplicity’. The products have become arch rivals to celebrities as millions of users will do anything to get hold of the latest releases. People wait in line for more than three days prior to the release of a new product be it an iPhone, iPad or Mac (looks like the list will expand soon). The company has become the face of the technology world. This time it is not about a product launch or service announcement, for the first time the company is axing employees! This is definitely a major management reshuffle for one of the biggest companies in the world. This shows the company is going through a change and it may be the start to other surprises expected in the coming months.
The people:
It is not regular employees who are axed but those who directly report to the CEO of the company, Tim Cook. One of the first to leave is Scott Forstall who is the VP of the iOS software. Though he will leave the company, he will remain as the advisor to Cook. Being the in-charge for the Apple’s Operating Systems, Forstall is rumored to be a controversial and eccentric person in the company. There are other rumors that he did not fit the corporate equation of the company even during Steve Jobs days. Though Jobs passed away, the company remained the same until now!
John Browett is yet another person who will be leaving the company. Unlike Forstall, he is a newbie and had joined the company less than a year ago. He is the VP for retail. It is rumored that Browett was the wrong choice from the time he got hired. Prior to joining Apple Inc, he was running Dixons, a famous UK-based tech chain of stores. However, Dixons was closed a few days’ backs and Browett got the job as VP when Dixons was coming down. These are just two of the many people who are leaving Apple.
The reason
Apple Inc has taken ‘secretive’ as their mantra as they have not given any specific reason why they are downsizing and axing the inner circle of the company. However, it does not take long to guess why the two were shown the door. Apple’s first headache was Siri and despite the highly marketed release, the software stayed too long in Beta and did not acquire the expected reach. The next big flop was the Apple Maps. The company literally had disgruntled customers knocking their doors and demanded explanations on the lack of functionalities, features and inconsistencies with the map.
The reason for Browett to get the axe is the supposed stir he caused among employees. The stores have a laid-back environment with customers taking their time to decide. Browett has supposedly asked the employees to push themselves to increase the sales resulting in cut-backs and longer working hours. Browett has publicly admitted that he had screwed up his work!
