Windows phones are yet to create a serious splash in the market, but they are certainly providing a genuine alternative to smartphone buyers. The Windows OS underlined the efficiency and ease of a “flat” and non-skeuomorphic design. For the user, this means that the tiles that you see in a Windows OS are incredibly intuitive, and hence user-friendly. Live tiles mean information (such as weather, news headlines, and stock prices) is dynamically updated on your home screen and thus readily available.
Moreover, since most of the world’s personal computers use a Windows OS, having a Windows phone means seamless integration with your desktop PC. So whether it is work or home, you can access email on Outlook, annotate a Word document, study an Excel spreadsheet, and jot down some notes in OneNote all on your phone, and on the go. In this post we take a look at some of the Best Windows Phones in India.
Best Windows Phones in India for 2013
Nokia has a Windows phone for every budget. And the way to go in 2013, is with the latest version of the OS: Windows 8.
Nokia Lumia 520
The Lumia 520 is a budget phone that comes in a variety of snazzy colors and a distinct matt-finished back that does not catch fingerprints and looks fresh all the time.
Priced less than Rs 10,000, this phone offers you goodies like an accelerometer, lost device tracking, and 7GB of free cloud storage. (Accelerometers are the hardware devices that rotate the screen when you rotate the phone and also track your speed so that you can use some high-end gaming apps and also running/jogging apps.)
The 4-inch screen is great for reading your email, watching videos, and browsing. The 5 MP camera allows HD recording and photography apps and filters such as Cinema graph, Smart Shoot, and Panorama make photography easy.
Nokia Lumia 720
The Nokia Lumia 720 has all the features present in the Nokia Lumia 520. Except of course that it is bigger (4.29 inches), and has a better camera (6.7 MP with a Carl Zeiss Tessar lens and HD recording) and an additional secondary camera.
What sets the Nokia Lumia 720 apart from all other phones in this list though, is its battery life which is a whopping 520 hours on standby (3G)!
Other interesting features include a Sculpted Corning Gorilla Glass 2 screen which makes the screen sturdy and readable in sunlight and an ambient light sensor.
This phone has Near Field Communications (NFC) technology, which is the next big thing. For now it is used in gaming apps, but it is only a matter of time before you will be using it for making payments instead of your credit or debit cards.
Nokia Lumia 820
As expected, the Nokia Lumia 820 goes one up on the Nokia Lumia 720 with significant improvements.
For example, the primary camera is an impressive 8 MP with a dual LED flash and usual Lumia host of applications like the Lenses app and Auto Focus.
The 4.3 inch screen is an AMOLED ClearBlack capacitive screen.
The most interesting feature of this phone is probably Qi wireless charging. Nokia sells a variety of wireless chargers. You can charge the phone by docking it to JBL NFC players while you are listening to music on your phone, or by putting it on a charging ‘pillow’ while you sleep, or by putting it in a wireless charging shell cover while you are on the go.
And oh – these chargers come in bright colours that match your phone!
The Nokia 920 is the high-end of the Nokia as well as Windows range of phones currently available in India.
Marketed as ‘The world’s most innovative smartphone’, this phone has won the Engadget Reader’s choice award for the best smartphone.
The primary camera is a 8.7 MP Carl Zeiss optics-enabled camera is equipped with PureView and Optical Image Stabilisation technology that captures blur-free videos even when captured with a shaky hand and in low light.
The HD+ display is super-sensitive to touch and offers clear, sharp colours.
If you are indeed looking for a superior phone with a great user experience, it doesn’t get better than this.

HTC 8S
The only non-Nokia Windows phone to make it to this list is the HTC 8S.
This phone is priced at approximately Rs 14,000 and competes with the Nokia Lumia 620. With a screen size of 4 inches the HTC 8S is slightly bigger. Other advantages it has are the Gorilla glass and Super LCD 2 display.
The physical design of this phone is unique. Firstly, the front of the phone has two distinct colours. Secondly, there is no seam running down the sides. The top of the phone is smooth and seamless. Access the battery and the microSD slots by removing the bottom part like the cap of a pen. This makes the phone a joy to hold and feel.
If you are looking for an alternative to the Nokia Lumia mid-range phones, this one won’t disappoint you.
