Most beginners are not familiar with the concepts of web hosting. Staying aware of the basic and fairly advanced concepts of web hosting will help you stay safe from the pitfalls associated with web hosting. A web page is stored on a higher specification PC because it is seen by general public connected through a powerful link to the internet. The process or phenomenon of making these web pages and websites available to the internet users is known as web hosting.
How Can Potential Web Hosting Pitfalls Occur?
Technically, it is not possible to have an internet connection that is powerful enough to connect the web pages from your PC and serve many users at the same time. Therefore, web hosting companies take on the responsibility of maintaining and owning powerful web servers and connect them to the internet, thereby making it possible for users to access your web pages or web sites at the same time. Most companies market their services providing vague technicalities that tend to confuse or attract the clients. This may result in a heavy financial burden for the website owner.
Web Hosting Pitfalls
Like any available online or offline service, web hosting also has potential pitfalls. There are certain jargon technicalities of web hosting that needs careful understanding. It is difficult to understand the requirements to get a good deal from the companies because there are some ill reputed companies operating in this area. However, a little information and understanding can help in avoiding the most common pitfalls of this area.
Hidden Charges and Fees
Some of the hidden charges and fees in the process of web hosting are associated with the bandwidth, setup and domain name transfer. Many companies claim to provide insufficient bandwidth for running your website, but they hide the original bandwidth charges. Therefore, you should check the small print for hidden charges because extra bandwidth cost higher rates than the normal allowance. You should also check for hidden setup or VAT charges that substantially add to your bill while you are hosting through or ordering domain name registration. Some web hosting companies may also offer free domain name transfer with low costs for domain name registration. However, there may be hidden fees to transfer your domain name for any reason.
Fake Service Benefits
Unlimited bandwidth seems to be a very attractive offer of the web hosting companies. However, no company is able to offer unlimited bandwidth practically. They will either force you to upgrade or close down your website on receiving too much traffic. Another potential pitfall is about the ownership of domain name that is purchased by you, but companies register to themselves. This means that you chose a domain name for your website, while the company becomes the legal owner of it. Therefore, you need to make sure that the companies you hire for your web hosting services register the domain name to you.
Contracts and Support
You need to carefully read terms and conditions of the hosting companies including the ones written in small print because most companies offer fixed or short length contracts. The minimum length of contract usually offered by the companies is one year. This means that you need to pay the charges every year. Technical support is essential for the beginners in web hosting.
Certain hosting companies lack in technical support that may lead to confusion and misunderstanding. Therefore, you need to ensure that the web hosting company responds quickly and appropriately whenever you contact them. Proper support and timely response will help you achieve the greater benefits of web hosting services provided by the company.

Hello Gloria,
I have seen this happening to many of my friends in last several months. My own website was shut down by my host because I received “too much traffic” and I my website consumed “too much resources” even though it is just a normal WordPress blog. I, then decided to have my own server and I have been happy thereafter.
Most people don’t understand these problems early on. But then, its okay because I guess that is why we all learn, bit by bit. And sometimes, people come across a blog post like this and then they get educated a bit more.
Thank you for sharing.
Regards,
Kumar
