Keep Tabs on the Rain in your City with the Rainy Days Android App

June 5, 2012

Well, I’ve been wishing and waiting for the rain to arrive in my city. It’s been blazing hot and let me just say that living for more than one entire month in temperatures of 102/103 degree Fahrenheit is no fun at all. I’ve been glued to the weather app on my Android phone, waiting for the clouds to emerge over my home city, eagerly looking for some signs of rain. While you may not exactly be hoping for rain in your city, you can always be alert to the fact that a downpour may catch you unawares and disrupt your happy plans for the day. Now, with the Rainy Days Android app you can always stay ahead of the weather in your city.

This cool Android app is a rain radar, and an animated one at that. The app currently covers Europe, Iceland, Scandinavia, USA including Alaska, Canada, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam, and Africa, so if you live around these parts, and own an Android device, it’s sure worth checking out.

Rainy Days App for Android uses images from buienradar, meteox, vaderradar, eumetsat and nws using Google Maps. Unlike other weather apps, this one shows you the approaching rain, rather than the clouds. You can pause the animation by a single tap, and share the screen with others on Facebook and Twitter or via email. You can also zoom in and out using double touch and long press actions. The Settings panel offers options to set the zoom controls, animation speed and opacity. You can also set location options and hide the legend among other things.

Android devices running Android 3.x and up also supports an Action bar that lets you perform various actions such as pause, play and share images.

Overall, Rainy Days is free and a fun way to check if the blessed showers are heading your way.
