Windows have moved a step forward with the launch of their new OS Windows 8, which comprises some of the latest in technology such as mobile support and compatibility for a number of interfaces. But, is it really the best OS when compared to Apple’s OS X Lion or the current version of Windows 7? In this post, we will try to answer this question, with comparisons between them on all possible fronts. At the end of the post, we hope to emerge with a clear verdict on the winner.
The Best OS – Windows 8, Windows 7 or Mac OS X Lion?
The Hardware
This is the main part based on which the OS runs. OS X Lion runs only on a 64-bit processor, which you can have only with a powerful machine configuration, while Windows 7 runs on both the 32 and 64-bit processors, thus limiting the sphere of its use to PCs. Windows 8, on the other hand is based on ARM, which is the processor used in most tablets and smartphones. So, simply put, Windows 8 is quite the counterpart of iPhone in terms of portability. Designed basically for touch screens PCs and tablets, it can demonstrate faster operations on normal PCs too, thus dramatically reducing the OS boot time.
Mobility
Windows 8 has taken connectivity to a whole new level. It can be used on any platform anywhere. Just like its predecessors, it extends the concept of progressive compatibility. The overall new look and feel of the new interface is similar to Windows phones, thereby making the transfer between desktop and tablet faster and easier. The OS X Lion has not implemented anything new or path breaking and is rather a technically developed version of its predecessor. Microsoft appears to have piped Apple in this regard at least.
Look And Feel
Windows 8 looks to have been designed keeping in mind the large number of tablet users. In addition, they have also maintained their standard look to appease traditional users.
In conclusion, it can be safely said that the initiative taken by Microsoft in the direction of touch screen far outweighs the steps taken in the making of OS X Lion.
Amongst the three OS platforms, Windows 7 stands no comparison to either of its competitors. Windows 8 is much better, easier and faster than its predecessor. With the launch of Windows 8, the gap has closed to a great deal between Microsoft and Apple in the tablet and touch markets. Apple’s monopoly until a few years ago has been changed dramatically. It is now a race for perfection and innovation. The next stage will tell us if Microsoft will pull ahead or Apple would pull up its socks.
