Tic Tac PhOto – A New Way to Tic-Tac-Toe

September 23, 2013

Not to be confused with tictacphoto.com, tic tac phOto by tictacphOto LLC is a cute little tic-tac-toe game using not so typical X’s and O’s to mark the squares; and, it’s available for free on both iOS and on Android. The game is played with a friend who you must invite to engage in a game. This friend can come from Facebook, Twitter, or through the in-app gallery. Just send them an invite to be a friend and once they accept, they will be added to your list of possible players.

So, how do you play tic-tac-toe with photos? When you start a new game you choose a square to fill, but you don’t fill it with an X or O. You fill this square with a photo that you take at that moment, from your camera roll or from previously submitted photos. The photo can be of an image that looks like an X or O, or it can look like something else.

Once you have taken your photos and made your move, it’s your opponent’s turn. Be aware that it may take a few minutes to a few hours for them to complete their turn. Some games may take minutes, while others may stretch for days. The fun of this game is that you are creating some interesting pieces of artwork while outdoing your fellow gamer.

Not only are you competing to win the three-in-a-row goal, but you can also make this a contest for the most interesting photo on the game board. Set a challenge to categorize the types of photos that can be submitted for play; for instance, photos of things on the ground, of faces, or of food items. The photo doesn’t have to depict an X or O, you can use your imagination to decide on what symbol represents each player and just have fun.

You play a game with just one friend and you can set it to private or you can keep the game visible to all users of tictacphOto by setting it as public. If you make your game public, then others can comment on the photos, like the game in the Gallery and on the phOto feed. Note that making a game public while you are playing means there are still only two players, you and your opponent.

This app is fairly fun and entertaining, but it has only one function, taking photos to play tic-tac-toe. There is not much more past that, except that you get to know other players and maybe make new friends in cyberspace. If you are looking for something simple to do while creating a interesting final product, then it’s worth a try. That, and you should like taking photos. The game gets more interesting when you start playing with rare and unique photos. Who knows, this game may end up improving how you see photo ops and give you a new light in your photography skills.

A square of nine unique photos either mimicking X’s and O’s, yin-yang, the odd couple, or any pairings you come up with to represent you and your opponent, makes for something fun and beautiful in the end. You can then share these competitive creations on Facebook or Twitter to let the world know that art can come from just about anywhere!
