The Apps You Never Use: Cleaning Up Your Smartphone

August 27, 2013

Smartphones resemble computers more closely now than older-model cell phones. They come with internal flash storage, and some smartphone models also have an additional Micro SD card slot so you can boost storage capacity. However, the space on your smartphone is finite, and it can quickly fill up if you don’t manage your data properly. This can have a negative impact on your usage, obviously, since you can lose the ability to load new media, take photos, and add necessary apps to your phone. cloud storageSo think about these four strategies to keep your smartphone lean, mean, and working smoothly.

Tips to Cleaning up your Smartphone

1. Arrange your apps

It’s easy to get carried away with downloading new apps, especially if you have the 4G LTE capabilities of the Samsung Galaxy S4. Compared to the HTC One, the Galaxy wins hands down when it comes to speed.

However, you still want to maintain your apps by sorting them by type or popularity. Use the built-in “Make Folder” and “Make Page” functions on the “Edit applications” menu to keep your apps organized.

When it comes to arranging your apps on the iPhone, you can easily drag and drop them into customizable folders. Each folder can contain up to twelve apps.

2. Do regular cleaning

As you rearrange items on your phone, make sure to delete apps you haven’t used in more than a week. While free app promos make it tempting to download more, think about whether or not you’ll end up using them.

Smartphones like the Blackberry Z10 can fill up even faster, since it allows users to transfer files wirelessly from other smartphones. Be sure to check your capacity limits in the settings once in a while and weed out music, photos, apps, and other files that take up unnecessary space.

Many OS utilities will give you a list of apps that take up the most space. Examine these beefy residents and decide if they’re really necessary.

3. Back up your data

Backing up your data can be done using a USB cable, if you are making a PC backup, or synced with cloud storage. Luckily, the super high LTE speeds of phones like the LG Optimus Pro will keep your backups up-to-date on the cloud.

If you don’t have access to LTE at any time, the Optimus Pro will connect to a speedy HSPA+ network. As you back up your data, be sure to check how much storage space it takes up. This can be a good indicator for when it’s time to clean up your apps.

4. Monitor Cloud Usage

If you are a heavy data user, you can purchase an iPhone 5 at 16, 32, and 64 GB hard drive sizes to meet your needs, but this phone does not have any additional hardware storage options, such as a Micro SD slot, for customization. This is why it is important to monitor your cloud usage, so you continue to have space for extra content and backups.

These tips should come in handy when you have a smartphone that’s filled with used apps. Following these best practices regularly will save you much work when cleaning up your smartphone after a long hiatus.
