Does the Apple Mac Need Antivirus Protection?

January 21, 2013

The Mac operating systems have often been said to be the safest ones in the world. They are also thought to be more intelligent and smarter than the regular Windows. This is not actually an assumption, but a real fact. Judging by most tests and results, there are no doubts that the Mac OS represents a very reliable option for those who want security. With all these, still there is a small number of Internet users using Apple systems, compared to the total number of Windows users. But does that mean there is no need for a Mac antivirus protection?

It is true that Windows is easier to use and more popular, but in the end, what you use the device for defines what you actually need. However, since the number of Mac users is quickly increasing, the same thing applies to the malware and virus coders who want to affect the latest and most challenging systems. There are currently three hundred threats specifically created to affect the Mac OS security. The truth is that most of them are nothing but simple adware programs. They are always ready to affect the inattentive and innocent users without too much experience. These viruses could even intercept e-banking sessions or give the attackers full control over your system. If you are careful with what gets inside your system, things are different for these sophisticated scripts.

You may feel safe just because you only enter websites you know or you don’t accept and download files from unknown addresses. But this is not always the case. A good malicious script will attack you when least expected and without you even being aware of it.

Why Apple computers are more secure than Windows systems?

From some people, the Apple Mac systems are safer than Windows. One of its main reasons is that most viruses and malicious scripts target Windows. Believe it or not, there are over a million viruses and scripts that target this operating system. On the other hand, you cannot compare them with the three hundred viruses and malwares for Mac. When you want the most out of your actions, you target the easiest systems. Since Windows is so popular, the Apple users can definitely relax for a while. Windows is also based on easy registries, so hacking into it is not the most complicated task in the world.

Another reason may be the fact that Windows users come from multiple categories, societies and statuses. For instance, you may use Windows as an engineer, but also as a kid or as a housewife. So they are not as technologically savvy as the Mac users. In conclusion, it is not too hard to get a Windows user click a link that will install or download a problematic script. Of course, it doesn’t work for everyone, but in the end, no hacker can tell an individual’s profile that easily. The key is in searching and this is exactly what these guys do.

With all these, the tendencies are slowly changing. More and more users orientate towards Apple powered devices only because they are cool. When you tell someone you use one of these systems, you seem sophisticated. However, it might be a matter of time until all these users switch back to Windows.

So, do you need antivirus protection for your Mac?

So does the Apple Mac need antivirus protection? The answer is obvious – it does. It may not be too complicated to protect a home computer you use for some basic activities. But when you choose this system for your business or company, you definitely want some protection since you may have important information. There are obviously some significant risks you expose yourself to without a proper protection, especially when your business deal with lots of employees. You don’t know what each of them does. Browsing the Internet during a break may be just as harmful sometimes.

Other than that, the same protection is also needed at home. Prevention is always safer than curing, so make sure you leave your computer in good hands.
