When most people think of social media, Google Plus is NOT one of the first sites to come to mind. In fact, Pinterest recently replaced Google Plus as the third leading social media site. Although Google Plus may not be as popular as Twitter or Facebook (and even Pinterest), it doesn’t mean that it’s ‘just another social media site’. Google Plus, if used properly, can actually be an amazing project management tool making it a fantastic resource for students and professionals. Read on to find out why Google Plus is so awesome for students and professionals.
The premise of Google Plus is simple; users create different groups of circles where they place their ‘connections’. For example, it would be wise to set up separate circles for friends, family, and colleagues. You probably wouldn’t want to send your coworkers pictures of your friend’s birthday party, for instance. The ability to share certain information with specific people so effortlessly makes Google Plus ideal for group work.
Students and professionals can use this feature to set up circles for their various projects or classes. Simply create the group and invite your peers. You can share all sorts of media with your groups like relevant pictures, videos, and websites. This is a much better alternative than sending out mass emails! It also makes it easy to catch up on information if you have been absent from the discussion. It certainly beats sifting through your inbox reading each individual email!
What sets Google Plus apart from other social media sites is Hangouts. You can see this nifty little feature on the side panel and on the upper right corner. Google Plus Hangouts is really just a fun term for group video chat. Unlike Facebook, which only permits you to video chat with one person, Hangouts allows you to video chat with up to 10 people! This is perfect for a quick brainstorming or study session. Hangouts is also integrated seamlessly with Google Plus, as opposed to Skype which is a stand-alone application.
Google Plus does not get the hype it deserves! Google created a fantastic site that offers something unique to the social media community, particularly for students and professionals. Circles and Hangouts are two powerful features that make Google Plus an excellent project management tool.
