Treasure Chests in Clash Royale offer rewards for your participation in the game. They usually contain gold, cards and sometimes gems as well. Some chests are timed, some are earned when you win battles, and some are given by chance. You can also spend real world money to buy gems which you can then spend on buying certain chests. Some chests have a lock-in period meaning you have to wait for a certain number of hours to reap the rewards of it.
You can of course, do an instant unlock if you spend gems, which are next to impossible to earn. Although its tempting to spend gems in unlocking chests, you may want to hold back on that strategy and first gain an understanding of the different types of chests and how you can redeem them.
