What To Do When Your iPhone Screen Breaks

May 4, 2013

Whether you have dropped your iPhone or someone else has broken it, having a broken screen can greatly damage its usability, as well as its value. You can choose to have your iPhone screen fixed in a number of ways including replacing the screen yourself, checking to see if the phone is still under warranty, or having a store that offers iPhone repairs do the work for you.

Options to Consider when your iPhone Screen Breaks

What To Do When Your iPhone Screen Breaks

Options from Apple

If you look online to see whether or not your Apple warranty covers a broken screen, you can get a lot of different replies. However, what Apple does and does not cover depends on your coverage and sometimes the reason why the screen is cracked. For example, if you have AppleCare then replacing your screen should cost £30 to £50 depending on where you are. If you don’t have AppleCare, it will cost roughly £170 to £200, although prices do vary depending on the location and where you purchased.

Screen Replacement Warranty

While your Apple warranty does not cover a screen replacement, your warranty from a third party store might. Check with the store you purchased the iPhone from to see if they cover screen repair. If your phone is within the warranty period, it is highly likely that they can sort it for you; especially if you purchased separate accidental damage coverage from them. While they might not cover your damaged phone, it is always a good idea to check to make sure.

DIY Repairs

If you’re handy around electronics and not afraid to take your iPhone apart, or to void any existing warranty on the device, you can make the repairs yourself. You will need a iPhone screen replacement for your model of iPhone and will most likely need the full display unit as most iPhones, including the iPhone 4, feature a screen that is fused to the lights and touch screen parts. You will need a pair of tweezers, a torx screwdriver, thin levers and a flat wedge such as a guitar pick. From there, you can carefully take the screen off. There are plenty of full tutorials online for each model of iPhone but remember that modifying it yourself does void any warranty so if you mess up, it is up to you to pay for the repair.

Taking Your Phone to a Professional

You can also choose to take your iPhone to a professional who offers iPhone repairs. While replacing your iPhone screen will not be cheap, it is likely to be cheaper than getting it sorted at the Apple Store. Prices will vary depending on the iPhone, the amount of damage and where you go, but you can likely get better prices by looking online.  A professional can likely have your iPhone screen problems fixed very quickly if you take your iPhone into a shop or within a week or two at most if you mail it in to them. You might also be able to purchase a full iPhone screen repair kit which you can easily use to replace your iPhone screen.

Breaking your iPhone screen can be stressful, especially if you don’t have a warranty. However, Apple’s warranty does not cover accidental damage to the screen anyway, so you might still be better off going to a store that offers iPhone repairs. You can likely purchase and have the screen installed for much less than you would from the Apple store. In either case, make sure you are honest about how the screen was broken, because it might change what else is broken on the phone. For example, if the screen is damaged because of water, the problems will be significantly different than if the screen is damaged due to a fall or because you were sitting on it.

Jann Webb is a writer who believes that if your iPhone is broken and you are handy at doing repair jobs, then you should consider saving money and doing the Iphone repairs yourself. However, if you choose to do this, you should note that your warranty will become void if you try to fix it yourself.
