Believe it or not, there was actually a time when computers didn’t exist, and businesses were run without the use of software programs? Seriously, I’m not making this up, it really happened! It all seems very strange in the 21st century, doesn’t it? These days we can’t really imagine an office workplace not having a range of business software programs to choose from. But what are the most important, and indeed most revolutionary, business software programs ever made?
Top Business Software Programs

Microsoft PowerPoint
It’s hard to imagine giving a presentation to colleagues and customers without a trusty digital image slideshow by your side, but that was pretty much how it went until Microsoft began developing the software which would eventually become PowerPoint in 1990.
From expressing business proposals to presenting academic presentations, PowerPoint has made conveying information so much simpler, and rendered awkward speeches a thing of the past.
Microsoft Excel
Spreadsheets, glorious Spreadsheets! How did business accounts ever manage without them? Did people really have to work out all those complex sums by hand?
Ever since Microsoft developed Excel in 1985, determining and presenting data has never been so easy, and will soon be released in a 14th addition.
With its technology of line graphs, histograms and other charts, Excel is an essential software program needed for any business to run smoothly.
Adobe Photoshop
Just when you start to think that Microsoft have all the best ideas, the Photoshop software from Adobe’s ‘Creative Suite package’ totally blows Microsoft’s long-standing Paint program right out of the water.
First developed in 1988, Photoshop has gradually become the number one software for manipulating photographic images with its ability to allow users to edit and enhance photographs at high resolution.
Photoshop’s advanced techniques have also made it a favorite tool of web designers. Put simply, Photoshop has changed the world of image development.
Microsoft Word
Well, what can you say about Microsoft word? It’s the software I’m using right now to write this blog. No other program has done so much to forward computer literacy and digital knowledge than Word has, and no software is more widely used in the world of business.
Word came into our lives in an early form called, Multi-Tool Word, in 1983, before being modified six years later to resemble the program we all know and love today.
By the dawn on the 90s Word had sounded the death knell for typewriter technology which was still clinging desperately to a last shred of relevance, and the advantages of using Word became one of the main reasons to invest in a PC for both your home and your office.
All hail the king of Software programs!
Anti-Virus Software
Last but certainly not least, every business in the world owes a debt to the brilliance of anti-virus software.
After all, it’s no good running a company with all the latest computer programs at your employee’s fingertips, only to get the whole system attacked by a computer virus that will invariably cost you thousands of pounds in damages, not to mention all the working time you will lose too.
Get those computers vaccinated, people!
With software technology becoming more advanced all the time, who knows what crazy new programs we’ll end up using.
Have we missed out some of your favorite business software programs? What kind of software does your business rely upon? Have you unearthed the best IT support companies that can help your business grow?
