Google Nexus 7 Review; the iPad Alternative

August 11, 2012

The Google Nexus 7 seems to finally be a formidable opponent to the dominating Apple iPad. The latest Android tablet has a sleek and stylish design and promises to offer the newest advances in tablets. With a growing market for Android applications specifically for tablet use, it could be what Google needs to enhance the popularity of its Play Store.

Google Nexus 7 Basics

Google Nexus 7 uses a seven inch screen with a 1200 x 800 high definition display. The glass used in the construction of the tablet is scratch resistant and has a built-in backlit display. As far as memory, each tablet comes standard with 1GB of RAM and the choice between 8GB or 16GB internal memory. No memory card slots are available to increase memory on the Nexus 7. However a micro USB card is available.

Battery power averages at 9 hours and the tablet uses a Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core processor. A 1.2 megapixel front camera allows for easy video chatting capabilities. As far as wireless connectivity, the tablet has both WiFi 802.11 b/g/n access and Bluetooth compatibility.

The Standout Features

One of the specs that tech lovers are getting excited about is that the Google Nexus 7 will include the latest version of Android. This update is referred to as Jelly Bean. Developers say that this is by far the fastest and smoothest version of the Android operating system to date.

Another thing that will please users is that you no longer have to be online to access Google Maps. An offline version is available on the Nexus 7. The built-in GPS will help you navigate without having to be connected to the Internet. Android Beam comes standard on the device and allows you share your location, messages, maps and directions with others.

This device is quickly becoming known as the gamer’s tablet. The super-fast quad core processor supports the graphics found on the latest games. The tablet also has a built-in accelerometer and gyroscope to use touch, tilt and tapping methods to control games.

iPad vs Nexus 7

One of the main reasons to consider the Nexus 7 over the iPad is the phenomenal price tag. With an iPad, you’re looking at spending a minimum of $500. Current pricing for the Google Nexus 7 is $199 for 8GB models and $249 for the 16GB versions. The iPad only comes in black and white while the Nexus 7 has multiple color options for the backs. The Nexus 7 is also lighter and has an increased portability when compared to the iPad. It uses a seven inch screen and weighs 340 grams. The larger screen and bulkier iPad has a weight of 652 grams.

Don’t miss this incredible tablet. Early reviews have been positive with gaming demonstrations showing no glitches. According to “PC Magazine,” following the June release of the tablet, it had already earned a 0.33 percent rise in traffic. With more apps becoming available that are specifically made for Android tablets, Google should be able to put a dent in the 87.5 percent of the tablet market that Apple dominates.

What do you think of the new Google Nexus 7? Will you get one?
